Guest bedroom ideas for a boutique hotel-inspired look

By our resident blogger: fashion, beauty and lifestyle editor Charlie Bell

The spare room can be one of the more neglected rooms in the house, often used as a dumping ground for laundry, junk and random pieces of furniture. But just a few simple tweaks can help transform the space into a chic guest bedroom for friends and family. So if you want to be the hostess with the mostess and give your guests a relaxing stay, we have heaps of products at Myles from Home to get you started. Warning – your guests may not want to leave.

Clear the clutter

First things first: clear the room of any unwanted clutter. It will help the room feel bigger and look less chaotic. If you tend to use the room for storage, keep things neat and tidy in some stylish lidded baskets that can be kept under the bed or on a shelving unit.

A sofa bed is a good option if you’re short on space or if you want the room to double up as a home office as well. A selection of decorative cushions will make the sofa bed look more inviting and we have plenty of stylish options that will add character to the room too. Whether you go for a playful Embroidered Cushion – Love, £35, or a plush Blue Palms Velvet Cushion,£72, pick three or four styles that blend effortlessly together and pile them up on the sofa or bed.

Keep the rest of the colour scheme neutral with light walls and white bedding to help the room look fresh, clean and hotel-like. You could even add a folding screen if you want to separate a desk from the sleeping quarters.

Overnight visitors will definitely appreciate a bedside table but if space is cramped, try installing a small shelf instead – something big enough for a lamp, our Traditional Desk Clock, £24 and a book. Adding a bench or ottoman to the end of the bed is also a great addition for guests to place their suitcase and belongings.

Finally, a mirror will bounce off light around the room and make it look bigger and brighter, such as our Demsa Iron Mirror with Shelf, £160.

Add fun flourishes

Now it’s time to add a bit more personality to the room for that boutique hotel aesthetic. Liven up bare walls and give your guests something to admire with a stylish gallery wall. We have plenty of cool and contemporary prints including this London Print, £60 by Reign & Hall – especially ideal if your house is in London. You could even leave your guests a sweet welcoming message on our Airport Style Letter Board, £25 for that extra personal touch.

Small yet effective, fresh flowers and plants will breathe life into the barely-used space. And they look even better styled in one of our statement vases – from the ever-popular Large Flamingo Head Vase, £34 the Jumping Fish Vase, £26, flowers will show guests you went that extra mile. You may forget to water plants in the spare room, so it’s the perfect place to use faux foliage instead – try our Faux Potted Philo Leaf Plant, £15 or an Ornamental Hanging Air Plant, £24 if you’re tight on table space.

And if you really want to tap into that hotel vibe, why not add your own little mini bar, minus the extortionate prices of course! Our Art Deco inspired Gold Drinks Trolley with Mirrored Shelves, £285 will do the job, adding a retro art deco feel to the room.

Thoughtful details

Small and subtle touches will make your guests really feel at home. Help visitors wind down before bedtime and add a few books - on a shelf or stacked up on the bedside table. Finish off with our Cast Iron Antiqued Pair of Toucan Bookends, £41, for all those dog-loving guests out there or our Cast Iron Palm Tree Paradise Pair of Bookends, £59.

A diffuser needs less upkeep than a scented candle and can be left unattended so add one of our St Eval Bay & Rosemary Diffuser, £28.50 to the room to welcome guests and set the ambience. Invest in low lighting – a table lamp such as the Paru Industrial Lamp, £110 or our Neon Acrylic Box – Love Wins, £104 if you want to be more playful with your décor.

And if you are really gunning for those five-star reviews from your guests why not add a bedside water glass and a jug of water. The Fali Tumbler in Smoke (Set of 4), £30, and Ruri Glass Jug (Small), £17 will work perfectly. Finish off with a stylish white robe and fluffy towels laid on the bed. Folding into a towel swan (optional!).

We hope you’re now ready to welcome friends and family into your home and give them a relaxing and memorable stay. Who needs five-star hotels!
